Chief of Staff

The Opportunity Trust seeks a multitalented Chief of Staff to lead internal operations, team building, and strategic planning efforts.  This role will give “lift” to a talented team coordinating education reform initiatives in St. Louis City and County.  Learn more and apply. 


The Chief of Staff is accountable for:


  • Strategic and management support
    • Supporting the CEO with staffing and managing the Board of Directors, including preparing for quarterly meetings, managing correspondence, and following-up on special requests
    • Serving as an in-house consultant to the Chief Executive Officer and Partners for a variety of special projects and initiatives
    • Facilitating annual planning activities, including performance evaluations, to ensure that the Trust’s strategy, budget, and operating plans align to maximize the organization’s impact year-to-year
  • Operations
    • Managing finance and HR vendors and coordinating projects ranging from annual auditing and tax filing to payroll to new employee onboarding and staff evaluations
    • Ensuring internal processes reflect the Trust’s core values and maximize the work of Partners who are coordinating the Trust’s grantmaking activities
  • Team building
    • Supporting the CEO with running equitable and inclusive staff recruitment and selection processes
    • Planning and staffing team development activities, including regular staff meetings, special events, and culture-building activities
    • Creating and maintaining internal systems for knowledge management and collaboration

  • Skills
      • The ability to diagnose cross-cutting issues or barriers within an organization, develop and test solutions to them, and invest others in the effort needed to change and improve
      • Extensive project management skills, including writing project charters and work plans and managing execution on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis
      • Excellent writing and visualization skills, including the ability to generate compelling slide decks for diverse audiences, including educators and board members
      • Strong verbal communication and relationship-building skills to establish credibility quickly with diverse stakeholders, from educators to board members
      • Strong attention to detail and a fundamental concern for the accuracy of information, including the ability to organize large amounts of data and track multiple projects simultaneously
  • Prior Experience
    • 7-10 years of prior experience in strategy or management consulting, project management, or special projects roles
    • Prior experience working in or supporting education sector organizations (schools, districts, nonprofits)
    • Prior experience with budgeting and financial forecasting
  • Technical Skills
    • Advanced proficiency with PowerPoint and Excel
  • Education
  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred
